US Summer 2011: Highway 49 Summer Adventures

by: Mhe-anne L. Ojeda

Date: July 2, 2011
Location: Highway 49 (Coloma and Lotus)

As first timer along Highway 49 ( so called because gold prospectors arrived in the area around 1849 during the California Gold Rush), I was thrilled at the plethora of activities I can do during the summer in this fabled Gold Country, other than traveling back in time (which of course I totally enjoy as a history buff anyway!).

The rugged beauty of Highway 49 leads along the river banks in which the beautiful rural communities of Coloma and Lotus lie, with their ranches and orchards, cafés, vineyards, bed and breakfasts, wineries, fine restaurants, golf courses and campgrounds. Ah, so much to do, simply unlimited summer recreation options like family picnics, camping, wading, whitewater rafting, soaring among the mountains and or just taking in scenic nature tours.

Connect With Family and Nature

With a wide river frontage and a tranquil surroundings, it is a perfect setting for family camping and connecting with the abundant beauty of nature and simply relaxing by the river. I saw lots of tents, trailers, and motor homes, RVs, bunkhouses, cabins and tent cabins. Truly a place for treasured memories with the family. Wish my family is here!!

Floating Mild to Wild

It is definitely a fun, amazing, adrenaline-pumping whitewater rafting with the running rapids that stretch from "mild to wild" and a breathtaking scenery along the river. Too bad,I didn't know about this water adventure just an hour away from Sacramento so I left my bathing suit in San Francisco and made plans for the fourth of July when my host's son will be heading to the river for the exhilarating whitewater rafting. I remember I was just "testing the waters" for him today.

Mellow Float

If the wild raft isn't for you but water fights is, how about heading afloat atop the calm and mellow section of the river. With the vast number of boats in the summer, boating becomes more of a social experience. I saw a boater tag registration and basic etiquette required in the river so large number of people can be accommodated without damage to the environment or serious conflicts among users.

Going Back to Basics

Sometimes there's no better feeling in the water than putting the splash gear hidden, getting back to basics swimsuit and enjoying the lazy river to your heart's content. The water in the river is a great way for cooler heads to prevail so how about a dip!

Family Picnicking

For bigger family summer activities, Highway 49 has a lot of safe picnic grounds for whatever your plan is. The mountain forest grounds with river access and grass play area for children ensures family fun and relaxation.

So from mellow and high level thrill-seeking summer adventures, Highway 49 environs are hard to beat!
